I started my Medium account in 2017. Then, in 2019, when you could earn money writing, I signed up for the Medium Partner Program. I have been there ever since.
This week, I published my 1,300th post on Medium, and looking back, I wanted to share a few things about my experience writing on Medium.
5 Truths About Writing on Medium
These truths might even be timeless truths with my experience on the platform. However, I hope to encourage more writers to get started with this platform and the options it has for them.
Medium Will Change
This can be good and bad for writers. It will be good for some and bad for some. The reality is, Medium will change no matter what you do. So, you need to embrace the change if you are going to write on the platform.
Medium is Great for Beginners
If you want to get started blogging, use Medium. It has many features, and without the Partner Program, it is free. The best thing, you can grow a following and capture emails on Medium. It is a great place for beginners to start and not have to set up a self-hosted blog.
Medium is Good for Everyone
It can be a great place for all writers. It can be a laboratory for ideas. A home base for your writing online. And even a money maker if you dial in what the platform wants you to be writing and how they want you to write. Personally, I like it for experimentation and capturing emails.
Medium is Flexible for You
What I mean is that you can write one time a week or three times a day. Your publishing schedule is up to you; it is a great place to play around with how often you publish. I tend to be more of a once-a-day publisher. But my posts range from 300 words to 1,500 words.
Medium isn’t Perfect
A lot of writers who have had success on the platform have left. Others are sticking around and adapting. The reality is that it isn’t perfect. And it might fit for a time and not for other times. I have stuck it out, sometimes begrudgingly, but I have found some great benefits for my writing and my own mental health with the platform.
Conclusion: Medium might be for You
Look, I’m not saying it’s for everyone. But I do think it has a lot of upsides. I have made thousands of dollars on the platform. I have used it to help me write my books. It has helped me capture followers and email subscribers. It has been good to me over the years.
Again, it can be a lot of things, but here are the five that I have experienced:
- Medium changes
- It’s great for beginners
- Medium is good for everyone
- It’s flexible
- Medium isn’t perfect
If you can handle these realities, maybe it’s time to sign up for the Partner Program, get your 100 followers, and start making money while figuring out what you want your writing to be about. Sign up for the Medium Partner Program today!
