If you want to become a better writer, you need to have a daily writing habit. You don’t have to publish every day. But you do need to be writing every day. It isn’t a difficult thing to start doing, but it does take a commitment and plenty of practice. In today’s post, I will share with you precisely what you need to do to create a daily writing habit.

The key to developing a daily writing habit is to establish a routine. Once you’ve found the practice of writing every day, you’ll be able to write and publish at your own pace. When I started writing online, I struggled to publish one article a week. Now, I can write 10 to 15 in a week and post every single day. And, I don’t do this full-time.

3 Steps to Creating a Daily Writing Habit

It is straightforward to start a daily writing habit. Yet, we let a lot of things get in the way. Whether it is work, family, or other commitments, we think we cannot write every day. However, these three steps will help you do it:

  1. Write at the same time every day.
  2. Write in the same spot every day.
  3. Commit to writing every day.

Scheduling my writing time has proven to be the most effective in keeping me motivated to write. My writing time always begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 7 a.m. Every day, no matter what, this is my designated time.

Every day, I also write in the same spot. We converted a guest bedroom into an office for my day job. In this room, though, we have set up a tiny place for my morning writing. It comes with an excellent chair as well as a side table.

Every morning, I write in that spot from 6 a.m. until 7 a.m., apart from my one-year-old waking up early and disrupting my routine. After months of doing this, I can quickly get back on track even if I go off the wagon.

Final Thoughts

Set your time and place to write. Do it every day for a month. Doing these three activities will help you form a habit. That habit will then see you through difficult writing periods or disruptions in your regular schedule. This is how you establish a long-term daily writing habit.
