If you want to become a better writer, you need to write a lot. In the beginning, you need to write for quantity. Heck, to build an audience you need to write for quantity. If someone tells you need need to write for quality over quantity all the time, they are lying to you and themselves. How do I know?
Well, you don’t get better by nitpicking every article and piece of work you write. You get better by practicing. No one became an outstanding writer simply by reading some books or articles. They did it by writing a lot. And, if you want to be a better writer, you need to write a lot. I mean it, a lot.
An Example of Quantity Over Quality
During the winter sports season in high school, I did not participate in any sports. But I was practicing for the upcoming spring baseball season. After school, I worked out in the weight room two to three times a week.
On days off from exercises, I would hit 100 balls off the tee in our improvised indoor batting cage. After that, I’d hit 100 pitches from the pitching machine. I’d have a friend toss 20 to 50 balls at me to hit if I had one available.
I put in the reps in the winter because I believed it would help me improve as a baseball player. I didn’t make it to Major League Baseball or even college, but I spent enough time preparing to be worth a darn on game days in the spring.
Putting in the Reps to Write for Quantity
To improve as a writer, you must devote time and write frequently. The more you write, the more proficient you will become. Sure, you’ll need to concentrate on quality at some time, but for many beginner authors, consistency is more important.
Repetition does bring quality. You can only make so many mistakes when it comes to writing initial drafts and publicizing them. You’ll need to improve your editing skills. You’ll need to work on your formatting. These things, however, require time.
Writing more frequently is the best approach to improve your writing quality. The more you write and publish, the more feedback you’ll receive, and the better you’ll grow as a writer.
Final Thoughts
Don’t let people discourage you from writing a lot. Over time, you will become a better writer. You will also become a better editor. The key for many of us is to write and publish a lot of content. We need to focus on practicing in public and working on our craft. This is how you learn to play the piano, play a sport, or do anything else.
If you want to become a better writer, you need to write a lot.
Let the quality people who haven’t put in the work give up after they start going insane. The rest of us will work our tails off, get better, and become better quality writers too. It takes time and practice and we need to do the practice.
